The GCHSM Board has spent 2024 updating the infrastructure of their facilities. Earlier this year, repairs, including some cosmetic touches, were completed. Recently, the brick street behind the main building has been the center of attention. Later this year, additional mortar removal, brick replacement, and tuckpointing will be done to the main building.
The brick walls of the Annex building were tuckpointed, including the foundation on the southwest side. The 1940s Rock Island mural, originally painted by local artist Jim Norris, was touched up, and all the overhang and trim were given a new coat of paint by Mid-Continental Restoration Company, Inc.
Mid-Continental will be returning this Fall to work on the main building. The wrong mortar was used on some earlier repairs, which caused damage to the brick. The mortar will be removed, the damaged brick replaced, and the walls tuckpointed.
The stretch of E 12th Street that lies directly behind the main museum building, nestled between Mabel Street and Tinsman Avenue, is Trenton's last surviving brick street. In 2022, the City of Trenton entrusted its care to North Central Missouri College and the Grundy County Historical Society & Museum.
In recent days, Sharp Stone Work, Inc. has constructed a monument sign and two gate posts. The monument sign will promote the last brick street in Trenton, close off 12th Street on the west side, and the two posts and a gate will restrict access to the street on the east side.
Future upgrades included in the last brick street project are the extension of the sidewalk along Mabel Street, and new fencing to replace the existing chain-link fence.
